About Breedtech

Breedtech is a veterinary reproduction company specializing in ovine and equine embryo transfer. It is not an ‘add-on’ service to a veterinary practice. It is for this reason that the operating skills are exceptional and results are consistently high. 

QUALIFICATION

Breedtech is owned and operated by veterinarians Dr Simon Bell and Dr Rebecca Bell. Graduating from Murdoch University Veterinary School they have specialised in embryo transfer for over 24 years.

EXPERTISE

Breedtech is a licensed quarantine and export centre for the export of ovine embryos and semen. Breedtech has exported to China, Mexico, New Caledonia and many South American countries including Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Paraguay.

OVINE SERVICE

Owner and Centre Veterinarian Simon Bell, has 22 years experience in the field of ovine artificial reproduction and has gained proficiency in all aspects of embryo transfer including embryo recovery, transfer and freezing. Breedtech services also include semen freezing and storage, artificial insemination and health testing. Breedtech has specialised exclusively in ovine reproduction since its inception in 2000. Breedtech consistently flushes over 1000 donors and freezes more than 2500 embryos for export each year. Breedtech was involved in the recovery of 30 000 embryos from just 200 Awassi ewes during a three year project between 2009 and 2012 and is currently exporting regularly to China.

Embryo Transfer

Embryo Transfer is an efficient way of multiplying elite genetics within a flock, increasing the rate of genetic gain. It can also be used to transfer elite genetics across the world with minimal risk of disease transmission.

Semen Freezing

Semen freezing can be used for the transport of elite genetics around the world decreasing the risk of disease transmission. Freezing semen enables studs to store the genetics of their best stock and to introduce new genetics whilst maintaining high levels of biosecurity.

Import and Export

Breedtech is accredited with the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAF) for the export of Small Ruminant Genetic Material. This accreditation allows Breedtech to export ovine semen and embryos and in addition Breedtech has attained accreditation to export to China, Chile and Colombia where specific requirements are necessary.

Artifical Insemination

Artificial Insemination is an effective way of utilising the genetics of elite males and removes the barrier of distance and time because of the successful use of frozen semen.

Health Testing

Breedtech is accredited to perform local flock health testing for the Brucellosis Accreditation Scheme (OVAC) and Ovine Johnes Disease (MAP). We also provide an export health testing service for the live shipment of sheep.

Embryo Sales Agent

Breedtech highly regards the commitment our clients make when developing and improving their sheep genetics. It is for this reason that Breedtech has not chosen to introduce their own genetics to the market and compete with our valued clients. Breedtech offers consultancy to assist in the purchase and sale of sheep genetics locally and internationally.

EQUINE SERVICE

Dr Rebecca Bell is the veterinarian responsible for equine reproduction at Breedtech. She is passionate about utilising specialist techniques such as embryo transfer for achieving breeding success that is otherwise unattainable in natural breeding programs. Rebecca’s approach to assisted reproduction techniques is built on a strong sense of horse welfare and intuitive handling.

Embryo Transfer

Equine Embryo Transfer is the answer to a number of breeding challenges. It insures the genetics of your best horses while they are in their peak fertility period or in performance training, it allows you to breed a mare who is unable to carry or foal successfully, or to breed your best mare more than once in a season. Breedtech also offers embryo freezing. Embryos can be stored indefinitely as your mare’s genetic insurance or held for a specific reason such as foaling time or better utilization of recipient mares.

Artifical Insemination

Artificial Insemination is a service that provides the breeder with a wide range sires, including international sires. Using either frozen, chilled or fresh AI, the options of a stallion are only limited to your imagination.

Stallion Semen & Stud

Breedtech offers semen evaluation and testing to ensure you know first hand, the fertility of your stallion. We also offer semen freezing which is an excellent way of ensuring your stallions genetics are secure or ready to be shipped to your next client. Breedtech will store semen from your stallion for speculative sales and you can browse the catalogue of stallions currently stored at Breedtech for use over you mare which currently include, Australian Stockhorse, European Eventing Warmblood and Thoroughbred sires.

Mare Scanning

Ultrasonography of mares is a key breeding management tool. If you need your mare diagnosed for pregnancy or you want to know when is the best time to breed her to save on costly agistment fees, Breedtech can assist you.

BELFAST PERFORMANCE HORSES

A new type of performance horse is being developed at Belfast Performance Horses. It is a proudly Australian horse for modern Australian performance needs, particularly for eventing. The choice to breed eventers has come as a natural progression to utilise and improve the innate versatility of the Australian Stock Horse. The horse will have the desirable temperament of the Australian Stock Horse – quiet and intelligent and able to relax after competition; the superior athleticism of competitive jumping thoroughbred bloodlines; and the comfort, movement and strength from the best warmblood eventing sires.

Donor Mares for ET

We have mares available for lease for embryo transfer programs. The mare may be owned by Belfast Performance Horses or a private owner wishing to sell their mares genetics. Contact us if you are interested in offering your mare for lease as a donor in an embryo transfer program.
